This Week in Both Sides Are Not the Same

My fervent wish was that the behavior of the Republican party throughout 2020 would finally lay to rest the claim that the two major political parties are the same.

The Democrats and the Republicans are not remotely the same and have not been for years.

Way back in the 90’s, Newt Gingrich led the way to the current toxic demonization and dehumanization of one’s political opponent. Well before Mitch McConnell, he paved the way in using such destabilizing tactics as organized obstruction and shutting down the government in order to gain and retain political power.

And now he have come to yet another inflection point in the current virulent strain of the Republican Party, that sees their political opposition as the enemy.

This is beyond inflection point. This is gunpoint.

HOUSTON — A former Houston police captain was arrested after allegedly running a man off the road and threatening him at gunpoint — what prosecutors say was part of an elaborate attempt to find evidence for a false conspiracy theory of widespread voter fraud in Harris County.

Mark Aguirre was working on behalf of a powerful Republican megadonor’s group to investigate unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud when, in October, he allegedly pulled a gun on a man described by the Harris County district attorney’s office as an “innocent and ordinary” air conditioner repairman.

Aguirre was arrested Tuesday, according to the Harris County district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors say Aguirre’s election fraud claims were baseless and that he was paid $266,400 by the group Liberty Center for God and Country, whose CEO is prominent Texas right-wing activist Steven Hotze.

Hotze was among a group of Republicans who unsuccessfully sued to have nearly 127,000 Harris County ballots tossed out this year. He was also among Republicans who tried — and failed — to stop Gov. Greg Abbott from extending early voting during the coronavirus pandemic, a suit for which Aguirre had provided an affidavit, stating that he was involved in an investigation into a “wide-ranging and fraudulent ballot harvesting scheme” in Harris County...........................................

We have the Democratic Party who are allegedly a bridge too far Republican voters and some Independents because they want to Defund the Police--which they never advocated--and because they are socialists, also a claim with no evidence.

And yet we have evidence piling up on a weekly basis, that the current Republican party is an unhinged enterprise; a welcome home to elected conspiracy theorists, to burn it all down Tea Party; to shock troops like Mark Aguirre and fake militia that think kidnapping a governor is patriotism.

The people who keep voting for Republicans shrug about what the party has become.

I never expect both sides to be the same, but I do look forward to the day when both parties are the sane.
